Baltimore and Ohio Railroad

Charted in 1827, the B&O was one of America’s first railroads. When it reached Cumberland in 1842, the city quickly became a major hub for both the railroad and regional industry.

Western Maryland Railroad

The WM reached Cumberland in 1906, connecting it with lines developed by the former West Virginia Central & Pittsburg RY which helped it become a competitor to the B&O and drive substantial industrial growth.

Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad

The C&P was charted in 1850 and grew to be an important local railroad linking both the coal mines and industries located in the George’s Creek and Jennings Run Valleys with Cumberland.

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal

The C&O Canal was charted in 1825 and finally reached Cumberland in 1850, establishing the city as the western terminus of the canal and as an important hub for transportation and trade.
